
Quartz vs. Ceramic: Which heat is actually better for your birds?
If you’re setting up a coop, you’ve probably noticed you’re stuck choosing between ceramic emitters and quartz infrared lamps. On the surface, they both just “make things warm,” but they actually work in totally different ways. Ceramic lamps are all about warming up the air around them. Quartz lamps? They’re different. They send out short-wave radiation that goes straight into the bird’s body. It’s more like standing in the sun on a crisp autumn day than sitting in a heated room. The speed factor Here is the thing about ceramic heaters: they’re slow. They have to heat up their own heavy mass before they even start warming the room. It takes a while. Quartz lamps hit their target temp almost instantly. We use a quartz envelope to protect the filament, which lets it get incredibly hot without just burning out. This creates a concentrated “warm zone.” The best part? The chickens can just move under the lamp when they’re chilly and step away when they’ve had enough. You aren’t wasting money trying to heat every single cubic inch of empty air in the building. Hardware that actually lasts We’ve seen ceramic elements crack over time.
